Your pelvic floor consists of muscles which support your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) happens due to weak, tight, or uncoordinated muscles. The unfortunate truth is that too many people brush off these early warning signs or are unaware that their condition is treatable.
At Access Physiotherapy, we take the time to explain how key technology can influence long-term rehabilitation. Don’t ignore these signs.
1. Urinary Leakage or Incontinence
Types of PFD include any involuntary loss or leakage of urine (for example, with coughing, laughing or exercise). This is something we all get following a pregnancy or as we age, but it’s not simply a “live-with-it” syndrome.
2. Constipation or Difficulty Emptying Bowels
If a person is frequently straining or has difficulty with bowel movements in general, that could be a sign of pelvic floor dysfunction. Your pelvic muscles are essential for bowel control, and dysfunctions in these can cause significant issues with regularity.
3. Pelvic Pain or Pressure
Chairs are uncomfortable, physical activity falters, and both often lead to one defining problem — persistent pelvic pain. Organ prolapse is a type of PFD, and you might feel heaviness or pressure in the pelvic region.
4. Pain During Intercourse
Similarly, for women, pain during or after sex is another major red flag. Or, it can be the result of a tight/tender pelvic floor and is treatable through Pelvic Physiotherapy.
5. Urgency or Frequent Urination
This is fecal and/or urinary (poop/pee) incontinence, where you have the constant urge to ‘go,’ or can’t get to the bathroom before it’s too late: your pelvic floor muscles are not coordinating well with your bladder.
6. Low Back or Hip Pain
You would be amazed at how some of those nagging, chronic hip or lower back issues could also be related to pelvic floor dysfunction. Your pelvic floor connects to your core and spine, so issues of dysfunction can show elsewhere beyond the pelvis.
